Architecture Begins with an Idea

Founded in 2008 by Freier Architekt Armin Widmann, Dipl.-Ing. (University of Stuttgart), Atelier O8 represents the continuation of an architectural practice that began in the early 1990s. Over more than three decades, Armin Widmann has developed a body of work guided by a consistent philosophy: architecture should emerge from a clear idea rather than from a predetermined style. While the name Atelier O8 was established in 2008, its roots extend back to the first independent projects completed during the early years of his professional practice.
The office was founded on the conviction that architecture begins long before materials are selected or forms are defined. Every project starts with understanding the site, the landscape, the light, and the movement of the people who will inhabit it. From these observations, structure, proportion, and space evolve naturally into architecture. Materials and details are not the starting point; they are the expression of an idea already formed.
Rather than pursuing a recognizable architectural style, Atelier O8 seeks timeless solutions rooted in clarity, restraint, and purpose. Structure is allowed to become architecture, movement becomes a design tool, and every element is expected to perform more than one function. The objective is not to create complexity, but to reveal simplicity through thoughtful design and careful integration.

The philosophy of the practice can be summarized in three enduring principles:

Site. Structure. Movement.

Every project is conceived as a response to its unique circumstances. Buildings are designed to belong to their place rather than dominate it. Space unfolds gradually through carefully choreographed movement, changing perspectives, and the interaction of natural light with structure. Honest construction, precise proportions, and a restrained material palette create architecture that remains meaningful long after changing fashions have disappeared.
Although the projects differ greatly in scale and program, they are connected by the same design philosophy. The Hotel Abalon in Stuttgart demonstrates how a constrained urban site can be transformed into an unexpectedly generous spatial experience through carefully composed circulation, natural light, and visual continuity. The Nowack House explores the relationship between architecture and landscape, where the structure becomes an extension of the site and everyday movement through the home defines the experience of living. The Guest Pavilion, a compact detached residence in Phoenix, distills these ideas even further. Every square foot serves multiple purposes, structure is fully expressed, movement organizes the plan, and the boundaries between inside and outside are intentionally blurred. Despite its modest size, the pavilion seeks to create a sense of openness, calm, and spatial richness through precision rather than excess.
For Atelier O8, architecture is measured not by its size or complexity, but by the clarity of its underlying idea. The most enduring buildings are those in which site, structure, movement, and light are brought into harmony. When these elements work together, architecture acquires a quiet presence—one that enriches everyday life while remaining timeless in its expression.

​Armin Widmann, Principal and Founder of ATELIER 08, is a published architect with more than twenty years of international experience in the design and construction of multi-million-dollar projects. He earned his professional degree in Architecture from the Technical University of Stuttgart, Germany, in 1984.

As Principal Design Architect of ATELIER 08, Armin Widmann is committed to creating architecture that is timeless, distinctive, and sustainable. His expertise spans every phase of the architectural process—from programming and conceptual design through construction administration and post-occupancy evaluation—allowing him to lead projects with a comprehensive and integrated approach. He works closely with clients, consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders to ensure a seamless design and construction process tailored to the unique goals of each project.
Licensed as an architect in both Arizona and Germany, Armin has extensive experience across a broad range of project types, including custom residential, hospitality, high-rise, commercial, mixed-use, renovation, and historic preservation projects.
His combination of design vision and technical expertise enables him to develop innovative, practical solutions that respond to each client's functional, aesthetic, and business objectives. Armin approaches every project holistically, seeking thoughtful, enduring design solutions that exceed client expectations while enriching the built environment.
